Academic Integrity

Policy Statement

Academic integrity is a highly valued principle at REU. It is clear that REU’s mission is to ensure high quality learning experiences that transform students into an individual excellence. As part of this mission, students, faculty, and staff all have an important role in upholding academic integrity values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility.

The purpose of this policy is to establish clear guidelines and procedures to prevent and address plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious academic offense that undermines the principles of academic integrity and the pursuit of knowledge.

Scope

This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff, and affiliated individuals associated with REU.

Definitions

Academic Integrity means being intellectually honest in all of a student’s work created in the pursuit of knowledge and submitted in his/her courses. All academic communities expect their work to be original, and REU subscribes to this tradition of intellectual honesty.

Cheating is an attempt to cheat, or violating instructions, and examination regulations shall render the student to punishment in accordance with the Student Disciplinary Policy.

Plagiarism refers to the act of presenting someone else’s work, ideas, or words as one’s own without giving appropriate credit or acknowledgment. Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:

  • Copying and pasting from written or electronic sources without proper citation.
  • Paraphrasing or summarizing someone else’s work without proper attribution.
  • Presenting someone else’s ideas or theories as one’s own.
  • Submitting a paper, project, or any other academic work that was completed by another person, in part or in whole, as one’s own.
  • Colluding with others to submit work that is not one’s own.
  • Self-plagiarism, which involves submitting one’s previous work for a new assignment without proper citation or approval.

Responsibilities

Students

  • Students are responsible for understanding and adhering to the university’s policy on plagiarism.
  • Students should always give appropriate credit and citations for sources used in their academic work.
  • Students must not engage in any form of academic dishonesty, including plagiarism.

Faculty and Staff

  • Faculty and staff members are responsible for promoting academic integrity and ensuring students’ understanding of plagiarism.
  • Faculty and staff should actively educate students on proper citation practices and academic honesty.
  • Faculty and staff should promptly report suspected cases of plagiarism to their department chairperson.

Policy

General Policies

  • Cheating is a disgraceful and immoral act; faculty members and students must be committed to integrity and honesty to ensure the accuracy of grades.
  • A student must carry out all assigned academic work or requirements him/herself, without any unauthorized assistance of any kind.
  • The course director must take care to keenly supervise and verify the academic work, so that students will be encouraged to be honest and diligent when carrying out their academic work.
  • All REU employees must observe the laws governing copyright. Any violation of copyright or any other law is the sole responsibility of the author of that Web page. Authors or originators using photos and images may need the permission of not only the person or organization that owns the photo or image, but also from any persons included within the images. Any use of other copyrighted material must have the express written permission of the person or organization that owns the copyright. REU reserves the right to require proof of the written permission and to remove the material if that proof cannot be produced.
  • Violations:
    • Cheating.
    • Impersonation.
    • Forging information in reports or signatures.
    • Obtaining or providing unauthorized assistance.

Procedures for Cheating

  • If the Course Instructor discovers any instance of a student ‘s dishonesty or cheating in homework assignments or any other course requirements, it is the instructor ‘s responsibility to take the appropriate action, such as giving a zero grade for that particular assignment or homework. The instructor must then prepare a detailed report of everything that happened, attaching evidence, if any, and referring it to the department chairperson, who in turn submits it to the college dean. The College dean will refer the case to the Disciplinary Committee, which in turn makes the necessary investigations and submits its recommendations to the college dean, in accordance with the student pg. 6 disciplinary rules. A student has the right to appeal to the college dean within one week after being notified of the decision.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of the case.
  • Inform the learner of the disciplinary action before implementing it.
  • Submitted assignment, research proposal, and master theses should be checked in terms of similarity / plagiarism using an authorized portal. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) decided that similarity should not exceed 15% excluding bibliography and similarity in sentences less than 5 words.

Procedures for Plagiarism

  1. Preventive Measures
    • Awareness and Education
      • REU shall provide resources and workshops to educate students, faculty, and staff on academic integrity and proper citation practices.
      • All students shall receive information about plagiarism during orientation and through academic integrity modules.
    • Citation Guidelines
      • REU shall establish and communicate clear guidelines for proper citation formats, including the use of citation styles.
      • Faculty and staff shall integrate discussions on citation practices into relevant courses and assignments.
  2. Detection and Investigation
    • Plagiarism Detection Tools
      • A plagiarism detection software is utilized to assist in the identification of potential cases of plagiarism.
      • The use of plagiarism detection tools will be governed by the REU’s privacy policy and applicable laws.
    • Reporting and Investigation
      • Any individual who suspects a case of plagiarism should report it to the department chairperson.
      • The department chairperson shall conduct a fair and thorough investigation of reported cases, ensuring due process for all parties involved.
      • Investigation outcomes will be documented, and appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken based on the severity and recurrence of the offense.
      • The student, faculty, or staff shall be referred to the relevant disciplinary committee at the level of the college or university for further hearing and investigation.
      • The disciplinary committee shall recommend disciplinary actions to the dean or university president based on relevant bylaws.
      • Inform the learner of the disciplinary action before implementing it.
      • The dean or university president shall approve, disprove, or amend the disciplinary action recommended by the disciplinary committee.
  3. Disciplinary Actions
    • Disciplinary Procedures

      Disciplinary actions for plagiarism may include, but are not limited to, the following as stated in the students’ disciplinary bylaws:

      • Warning and educational interventions.
      • Grade penalties, including failing the assignment or course.
      • Disciplinary probation or suspension.
      • Expulsion from the university.

Procedures for Impersonification

In the event of identity theft, the following procedures apply:
  • Preparing a detailed report of everything that happened, attaching evidence, if any, and referring it to the competent committee in the entity.
  • Reporting the violation to the violating person according to the results of the report, in a gradual manner and according to the learner’s behavior (failure).
  • In the subject, failure in all semester subjects….. (a) Or whatever the authority deems appropriate.
  • Maintaining the confidentiality of the case.
  • Informing the learner of the disciplinary action before implementing it.

Any individual subjected to disciplinary action may appeal the decision according to the university’s established appeals process. Please click the link to download the Appeal Form.

Attendance and Absenteeism

Students’ Attendance and Absenteeism Policy

Attendance in e-learning courses is mandatory just as face-to-face courses. Online students need to login into their Learning Management System (LMS) according to the course schedule. Please refer to your online faculty’s course requirements and specifications and ensure you actively participate in your online course. Attendance will be tracked through the online student management system by the faculty. Attendance will incorporate completion of course requirements, participation in completing course assignments and interactions with faculty.

Scope

This policy applies to all credit bearing e-learning courses offered by REU.

Responsibilities

  • Course Instructor
    • Instructors in the e-learning mode are responsible for following up on students’ attendance.
    • And reporting excessive and/or unexplained absences to the Counseling Department for investigation and potential intervention.
  • Academic Deanship
    Academic Deanships are responsible for ensuring that all faculty members are aware of this policy and comply with its provisions.

Policy

  • Electronic attendance through virtual classes is equivalent to regular attendance.
  • Students are expected to regularly attend all classes for which they are registered.
  • A percentage of the student’s grade will be based on class attendance and participation. Absence from class, regardless of the reason, does not relieve the student of his/her responsibility to complete all course work by the required deadlines.
  • The student is committed to attend the study unit virtually and all course activities according to the modes of instruction in the course specification approved in the study plan and subjected to be denied of entering the final examination if his/her attendance rate is less than (75%) of the total contact hours for all course activities.
  • The student who is denied of entering the final examination due to absence shall be deemed to have failed the course and is given the grade denied (DN). Within the period specified by the Deanship of Admission and Registration Affairs, the course director shall determine the percentage necessitating denial, and it is automatically reflected in the student’s grade in the course.
  • The College’s Board (that offers the course) or it’s delegate may exempt the student from denial and allow the student to enter the final examination, only if the student submits an excuse accepted by the College’s Board or Institute’s Council or it’s delegate, provided that the attendance rate of lectures is not less than (50%) out of the total contact hours for the course.
  • A student who failed to enter the final examination, the final examination will be marked zero (0) and the grade of the course is calculated according to the course work grade.
  • If a student is not able to enter the final examination due to certain excuses that are accepted by the College Board, an online makeup exam arranged by the first week of the following semester.
